Why we scan from 15 weeks

At this stage, we are looking at very small details, so timing matters. Before 15 weeks, baby's development is not advanced enough for reliable gender determination. Some places may offer earlier predictions, but we do not recommend relying on scans before this stage. We would rather wait until we can give you the most confident answer possible.

Nobody can promise 100% accuracy with ultrasound, but we are proud of our 99.9% gender accuracy rate, built from scanning thousands of babies since 2003.

How we determine baby's gender

For gender scans, 2D imaging is usually the clearest method. While 3D and 4D images are wonderful for bonding later in pregnancy, 2D gives the sonographer the clearest view for sexing baby. Your sonographer will look carefully from different angles and explain what they are looking for. Baby's position, the umbilical cord, gestation and image clarity can all affect what can be seen on the day. We do not rely on “nub theory” or “angle of the dangle” for confident gender confirmation. These are only theories and are not reliable enough for planning a reveal or telling family and friends.

Planning a surprise reveal

If you want to keep the result a surprise, please tell our team before your scan. We can keep the screen turned away at the right moment and prepare the result privately for you. Gender reveal items may be available to purchase on the day, including:

Balloons
Confetti cannons
Pink or blue heartbeat bears
Other reveal items, depending on availability

For the full gender reveal experience, our Sneak a Peek 2D/4D package is usually the best option.

Before your gender scan

Please make sure you are at least 15 weeks on the day of your appointment. For the clearest scan, please arrive with a full bladder if you are between 15 and 26 weeks. A full bladder helps lift baby out of the lower pelvis, which can make gender assessment much easier. Please also bring your hospital notes or dating scan information, as we may need these to confirm your due date.

If baby is not in the right position

Sometimes baby's position, the cord, BMI or image clarity can make gender difficult to confirm on the day. If this happens, your sonographer will explain clearly what can and cannot be seen. If we are unable to confirm baby's gender, our gender scans include a free rescan guarantee.
