What is an early pregnancy scan?

An early pregnancy scan is an ultrasound examination carried out between 6 and 12 weeks of pregnancy, based on the first day of your last menstrual period. If you are unsure of your dates, a simple guide is to wait around 2 weeks from your positive pregnancy test before booking, or call us and we can help you choose the right time. At this early stage, pregnancy development can vary significantly from person to person and from day to day. Some scans may be limited or inconclusive, even when a pregnancy is progressing normally. Where possible, your early pregnancy scan may include assessment of:

Location of the pregnancy
Gestational sac
Yolk sac
Fetal pole, where visible
Fetal heart activity, if visible at your stage of pregnancy
Approximate gestational age
Single or multiple pregnancy, where identifiable

It is important to understand that a heartbeat is not always visible at 6 weeks, and this does not automatically indicate a problem.

Why choose a private early pregnancy scan?

Many clients book for reassurance before their routine NHS scan. Common reasons include previous pregnancy loss, pain or spotting, irregular cycles, anxiety in early pregnancy, or wanting confirmation before sharing pregnancy news. Reasons people choose our service include:

Appointments available from 6 weeks
No GP referral required
Flexible appointment availability
Calm, discreet and confidential environment
Time for explanation and questions
Care delivered by qualified, regulated professionals

Our service is designed to complement, not replace, your NHS maternity care.

When should I book?

Early pregnancy scans are offered from 6 weeks of pregnancy, depending on your last menstrual period. Scanning earlier than this often means that clear findings cannot yet be seen and may lead to unnecessary anxiety. If you are unsure when to book, please call us and our team can advise you.

What to expect at your appointment

Your appointment includes a clinical ultrasound assessment, clear explanation during the scan, time to ask questions and supportive care from a qualified sonographer. An abdominal scan is usually attempted first. If clear views cannot be obtained, we may discuss the option of an internal transvaginal scan. This is entirely optional, only offered when appropriate, and always performed with your full consent. Whatever your reason for booking, our approach is non-judgemental, supportive and clinically led.

Important safety information

Early pregnancy scans:

Do not replace NHS maternity care
Cannot guarantee pregnancy outcome
May require follow-up where development is very early

You should continue to attend all NHS appointments regardless of the outcome of your scan with us. If you experience severe pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting or heavy bleeding, please seek urgent NHS medical care immediately, regardless of scan findings.
